MOSCOW — Mikhail Kalashnikov, whose work as a weapons designer for the Soviet Union is immortalized in the name of the world's most popular firearm, has died at the age of 94.

The AK-47 — "Avtomat Kalashnikov" and the year it went into production — is favored by guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of many armies. An estimated 100 million guns are spread worldwide.

He died Monday in a hospital in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic where he lived, said Viktor Chulkov, a spokesman for the republic's president.

Kalashnikov often said he felt personally untroubled by his contribution to bloodshed.

"I sleep well. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence," he said in 2007.

Do you think there is any truth in the story that the NRA is sending a special rifle and lead emissary to attend Mikhail Kalashnikov’s funeral? That he is to be enshrined in the school-shooter hall of fame for his inventiveness that allowed maximum efficiency for random human slaughter? Yes, I know I’m stretching a point well beyond its breaking point here, but hasn’t the NRA been doing the same stretching since its inception—or at least since it came to realize that zillions of dollars could be made by putting deadly weapons in the hands of people who feel compelled to willy-nilly end a life form, human or otherwise, by pulling the trigger of a weapon of mass and bloody destruction.

Kalashnikov developed this gun in 1949, decades before the first American school shooting. No, we need to lay the blame for these heinous acts on our society. Violent video games, a justice system that mollycoddles criminals, a school system that has passes students from grade to grade without being instructed or disciplined, and a society that believes God and morals are unimportant (and are in fact a problem). We are reaping what we sow. Mr Kalshnikov and his rifle have nothing to do with it.
