Beebe plans to shorten inmate’s sentence

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe’s office says he plans to shorten an inmate’s prison sentence from 240 years to 40 years.
Beebe’s office said Friday the governor intends to grant a commutation of sentence to 52-year-old Larry Brothers.
The governor’s office said Brothers was convicted in 2001 of fleeing, theft by receiving, criminal use of a prohibited weapon and several drug charges.
Beebe’s office says a notice of intent to grant a commutation issued Friday is based on the length of time Brothers has served and the facts surrounding the incident.
Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample says they felt shortening Brothers’ sentence would be just. DeCample says the commutation means Brothers would be eligible for parole in 9 years. The governor’s office said the Jackson County Sheriff objected to the application.

Yea, let him on the streets again. These Governors, like the goofball in Mississippi, need to be stripped of this power.

I don't really approve of altering sentences for any reason except finding proof that the person was actually innocent. But on the other hand, without the carrot of early release held out for good behavior, the prisoners might be far more difficult to control. It gives them a reason to be cooperative and well behaved, to apply themselves to useful activities.
No other governor of AR has released as many prisoners with as many bad results as Huckabee.

Governor Beebe has been very cautious in any pardons or commutations he's issued. I'm sure he also gave this serious thought. This inmate will not be out for another 9 years. There are people who have committed far more serious crimes who have gotten lighter sentences than 40 years.

I like the Governor, but I would like to know more of the details as to why one inmate from Jackson County is getting consideration. This power has been abused so much in the past by presidents and governors.
