Arkansas Queen to shut down

By David Harten

This article was published January 8, 2013 at 6:10 p.m.

— The local steamboat the Arkansas Queen will no longer provide services to local patrons, according to a letter obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

The letter, sent from the office of North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith, said that the riverboat went stagnant as of Jan. 6. The decision was made by the boat's handlers, the Mississippi Riverboat Company, LLC.

The ordeal surrounding the shutdown centers around the city failing to provide a replacement barge after the removal of the Salty Parrot Barge, which, according to the letter, represents a breach of lease between the company and the city.

This is too bad. LR and NLR need tourist attractions like this to gain tourists. The cities heritage is the Arkansas river.

I say we get some john boats and guides with long beards. Do a Duck Dynasty and Swamp People mix. Either you get dinner or you get to be dinner.

NLR should have never booted "GATORS" out of there. They had more people at Gators on a weekend, than that over priced boat had in a month. And Mr. Reporter Dude....it is not a steamboat.
