JAMES C. ARCHER SR., 72, of North Little Rock, passed awayFriday, Jan. 25, 2013. He was born in England, Ark., to the late Leo Herbert and Lois Edith Freeman Archer. James served as a Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputy for two years andworked in the auto parts industry with Crow-Burlingame Co. for 40 years before retiring.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, James C. Archer Jr., and his sister, Faye Dean Sain. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stanphill Archer; two sons, Scott (Stacey) Archer of Fort Smith, and Darin Todd (Lisa) Archer of Texarkana, Ark.; daughter-in-law, Vicki Archer of North Little Rock; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

RUTH DAVENPORT, age 69, of Sherwood, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. She was born Feb. 13, 1943, in Wehlen, Germany. When she was 18, she married an airman and made the brave move to America. She was a loving and selflesswife, mother, and grandmother. She began each day with strength, wisdom, and courage, and through all adversities, she kept a positive outlook on life. Her personality was a testimony to everyone she met.

Ruth was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) with her husband for 24 years. She was also a faithful member of Sylvan Hills Community Church. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends and the Sherwood Senior Aerobics group. She also loved tending to her beautiful garden.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Mathias Wagner and Maria Baum; her brother, Ottmar Wagner; her daughter Tina Willim; and her grandson, Charley Boring III. She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Grover D. Davenport of Sherwood; her brother, Theo and wife Adelheid of Germany; sisterin-law, Inge of Germany; three children, Tammie J. Tabor of Cabot, Jerry E. Davenport of Perryville, Michael E. Davenport of O’Fallon, Ill.; four grandchildren, Heather J. McCoun and husband Robert of Angleton, Texas, Shane A. Tabor and wife Laura of North Little Rock, Jennifer L. Davenport of Cabot, Jason E. Davenport and wife Tiffany of Sherwood; and five great-grandchildren.

JIMMY CARROLL DEMPSEY, 60, of North Little Rock, died Friday,Jan. 25, 2013. He was born Nov. 4, 1952, in Pine Bluff. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in North Little Rock, and a US Army Veteran.

He was preceded in deathby his father, Edward Dempsey, and brother Kenneth Charles Dempsey. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Millender Dempsey, his mother Faye Nutter Dempsey; brothers, Troy and Charles Dempsey; sister, Renita Heinley, and numerous other family members.

ELIZABETH EUGENIA GARY DOWDEN, of Little Rock, passedaway Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. She was born on Nov. 11, 1924, in Magazine, Ark., to the late Joseph Homer and Zena Irma (Oliver) Gray. Eugenia was a member of Immanuel BaptistChurch, and was in Elizabeth Sunday School Class.

She was a bank teller for Worthen Bank for 30 years. She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Tulloch, and her husband Donald, of Little Rock, Ark., Linda Johnson and her husband, Ross, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; one grandson Christopher Patrick Aldridge; one sister, Marcella Gray Allen, of Little Rock; other relatives and friends. Eugenia was preceded death by her husband A.C. Dowden of 50 years, parents and a sister Barbara Owens.

DORIS H. FOSHEE, 75, of Little Rock, passed away on Jan. 24, 2013, at the Good Shepard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 22, 1937, in Danville Ark., she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Veda Hefner.

Beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, she worked for the Little Rock public school district for 29 years. She enjoyed spending time at home with her family and especially grandkids. Mrs. Foshee is preceded by her husband of 42 years, the late Elmer Leon Foshee who passed in 2001. She is survived by her sons, Larry (Maria) Foshee of Little Rock and Jerry Foshee of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Emma and Matthew Foshee; two brothers Jay (Diane) Hefner and Harold (Betty) Hefner of Russellville; a sister, Hazel (Jimmy) Staggs of Russellville; and many nieces and nephews.

SANDRA JOETHA GARTH “JO”, age 72, of Little Rock, Ark .,was born Aug. 31, 1940. She passed away Jan. 25, 2013. BOBBY KENNETH MORGAN, 78 of Little Rock, passed awaypeacefully on the morning of Jan. 26, 2013, to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born on May 15, 1934, in Star City. He graduated from the University of Monticello and was a retired director for Arkansas Employment Security where he worked 38years and was respected by many. Bob was a proud member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock where he was a dedicated Deacon and Usher for many years. One adjective to describe Bob would be faithful. He was faithful to God, his church, his friends, but most importantly his family. He was a member of the Branchville Masonic Lodge in Star City where he was a 32nd degree mason. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He is preceded in death by his parents, Houston R. Sr. and Venia Williams Morgan; his daughter Pam Morgan; and his brothers Wilbur and Gilbert Morgan. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Jacobs Morgan of Little Rock; his daughter Karen Rial of Mabelvale; his special granddaughter Morgan Adams of Mabelvale; his four brothers, Leonard, Raymond, Ronnie and HR Morgan of Star City; and his two sisters Dorothy Hawkins of Star City, and Linda Harrison, of Benton. VIVIAN EWELL MORROW, 77, who retired Sergeant of the Jacksonville Police Department, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. Born Sept. 11, 1935, Bakersfield, Calif., formerly from Modesto, Calif., Vivian moved to Arkansas to become a Law Enforcement Officer. She started as a certified EMT and soon attended the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy with aspirations of working in the juvenile department, speaking for the youth and families of Jacksonville. She is survived by her three children, Michael Morrow of Las Vegas, Nev., Julie Mara of North Little Rock, Ark., and her youngest, Gregory Morrow of Jacksonville. She has three grandchildren, Grey Morrow, Harrison Mara and Georgia Mara. Vivian was known to never meet a stranger, so she leaves many loyal and caring friends who will miss her and her voice. LAURA JANE NEWMAN, 55, longtime Little Rock resident and native of Hot Springs, joined her angel friends, and family, Jan. 25, 2013, after an incredible journey through life. She worked as a writer for nearly 30 years, including as a newspaper reporter, public relations professional, and in corporate communications. She served in past years as president of the Arkansas Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, chairperson of Riverfest, president of the Arkansas Women’s History Institute, and as a member of the St. Vincent Auxiliary.

She received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Alabama, a master’s degree in writing from UALR, and was a doctoral fellow in Rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University. She volunteered for many community causes and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

After an incredible journey through life, her last seven years, while influenced by a diagnosis of Metastatic Breast Cancer, were busy with family and friends. She discovered the bliss of life and spent every day celebrating the beauty of each moment. She was not conquered by cancer because she beat the odds and lived each day to the fullest believing that each daywas a gift from God. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2006 she spent her time writing, knitting, needlepointing, traveling and working on her “bucket list,” and encouraging/inspiring others. She and her dog, Louie, were pet therapy volunteers for Arkansas Hospice and she was a handbell ringer at Trinity Cathedral.

She is survived by her parentsJerry and Sue Newman of Arkadelphia; two brothers, Dwight of Harrison, Ark., Marcus and his wife Teresa of Paducah, Ky.; two nieces and two nephews which she adored; a host of wonderful cousins, friends and caregivers and her precious dog Louie. VELLA HUBBS PEARSALL, born in Green Forest, Ark., on Christmas Day, 1925, to parents, John L. and Vida Hubbs, passed away on the morning of Jan. 23, 2013. CABOT - Katherine Leona Farrow, 79, of Cabot, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. She was born April 29, 1933, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. to the late James Eugene and Catherine Ollie Avant Thompson.

Mrs. Farrow was an active member of the Christian Church in Beebe where she was involved in children’s Sunday School classes and producing the Church programs. She was also a member of The Ladies of the Church which worked to raise money for children in third-world countries.

Mrs. Farrow enjoyed writing religious poetry and wrote the story of her life. Above all, Mrs. Farrow was a devoted wife and mother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Farrow was preceded in death by her sisters, Louise Collins, Mariam Lowe and Nadine Thompson.

EDGEMONT - Frederick William “Sonny” Janssen, 83, of Edgemont, passed away on Jan. 22, from prostate cancer. Fred was born in St. Louis, Mo. on Aug. 9, 1929. He married Patricia Ruth Powell on Valentine’s Day and they were married almost 60 years. Fred worked in a grocery store before and after school as a child. Licensed to practice law in 1978, he was a founder of Cox & MacPhee (later known as Henry, Cox & MacPhee) in Hot Springs, and also served as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Garland County before joining Weyerhaeuser Company in 1993 as Corporate Counsel. At the time of his death, Bruce was Senior Legal Counsel-South for Weyerhaeuser.

He is survived by his wife, the former Leah May of Hot Springs; a daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Holt (Dr. Jeff Holt) of Little Rock; a son, Walter John MacPhee of Hot Springs; a sister, Heather MacPhee Niday (Chuck) of Arbovale, West Virginia; a brother, David MacPhee (Liliana), of Little Rock, and his parents.

Bruce was a loving husband and father, as well as being devoted to his family and friends. He was known for his many commitments to Hot Springs. He served on the Downtown Historic District Board, Hot Springs Family YMCA Board, Lakeside Alumni Association Board where he served as President, and the Screening Committee of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. He was recently recognized as Volunteer of the Year by Garland County Habitat for Humanity after preparing the closing documents of all 100 of the Habitat houses built in Garland County over the past 15 years. He loved to travel, paddle white water rivers, hike, cycle, golf, read, cook,and spend time with family and friends.

Bruce was a former member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he served two terms on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. Bruce had in recent years attended Lake Valley Community Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hot Springs, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE - Joe Frank Atkinson was born Jan. 1,1927, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Samuel Luther Atkinson and Eila Callaway Atkinson, the youngest of siblings Mary Jane Atkinson, James Wiley Atkinson, Samuel Luther Atkinson Jr., all who preceded him in death.

He attended Gabe Meyer Elementary School, Pine Bluff Junior High School, and Pine Bluff High School. He joined the Army Air Corp, serving in Japan in the military police. As a student at the University of Arkansas he met his wife of over 63 years, Adair Crane. Graduating with a Bachelor of Business, he and his family lived in Vicksburg, Miss., prior to moving to Shreveport, La., where they lived for 40 years.

The last 16 years of their time in Shreveport, Joe and Adair spent the warm months on a houseboat on Lake Ouachita, where they had many good times with family and friends. He loved being on the water and enjoyed fishing. They have lived in Hot Springs Village since 1992.

Joe was a member of the United States Power Squadron, teaching numerous boating and boating mechanics classes. He was an avid golfer and served as a Marshal at Cortez Golf Course in Hot Springs Village. Joe was a passionate volunteer, serving as Assistant Leader of Boy Scout Troop 25. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Elks. He was a volunteer AARP Tax Preparer. He was a deacon at several Presbyterian churches, and Head of the Board of Deacons at Dunlap Presbyterian Church in Shreveport. Joe’s careers were in business sales working for Baird-Polan and Procter & Gamble, until a work accident forced early retirement. He then worked as an independent investor.

Joe was known by his family and friends for his twinkling blue eyes and contagious smile, his humor and his story-telling, and his love for his wife, Adair Atkinson, and their family, children Martha Atkinson D’Anna, Joe Frank Atkinson, Jr. (Fran), Ruth Atkinson Lee (Mike); grandchildren Lisa D’Anna Smith (John), Frank Christopher D’Anna (Jessica), Joe Frank Atkinson III, William Andrew Paul, Kristin Atkinson Stuart (Bleu), Lauren Crane Paul (fiance Colin Dean), and Rebecca Anne Paul; greatgrandchildren Ashley, Lindsey, and Haley Smith, Olivia and Jillian D’Anna, and Will Stuart. He will be missed greatly by his family and his friends.

The family extends much gratitude to Joe’s recent caregivers for their loving care, Primary Care of Hot Springs and Edith & Mark Todor, VA Foster Care Home. A service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Joe’s life will be held Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, 10 a.m. at Kirk in the Pines Presbyterian Church, Hot Springs Village, Ark. JONESBORO - Mr. Samuel Wilford Hoover Jr., 60, of Jonesboro died Saturday peacefully in his sleep at his home after a long illness. Mr. Hoover was born Sept. 16, 1952, in Crossett, Ark., and had lived in Bartlett, Tenn., for 22 years before moving to Jonesboro a year ago. Sammy was an outdoorsman who loved to fly fish, scuba dive, bicycle and backpack, He also enjoyed Go Kart racing, target shooting and photography. Sammy was a member of the Stone Street Church of Christ in Jonesboro, Ark., and previously he attended the Rocky Point Church of Christ where he served as an elder.

He was the son of the late Samuel Wilford Hoover Sr. and Wilma Hall Hoover. ROSSTON - Alford B. “AB” Luck, 90, of Rosston passed away Jan.25, 2013, in Little Rock, Ark. He was born April 9, 1922, in Rosston, Ark., to Joe D. and Mary Adie Luck.

AB was a retired optician for Bausch & Lomb, a World War II South Pacific Veteran, and recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rosston where he served as a Deacon.

WHITE HALL - Janice Sue Grider was born July 4, 1923, at Denning,Franklin County, Ark., the daughter of Daisy and Charles Huckaby. A graduate of Ozark High School, attended Draughns Business College in Fort Smith, Ark., and Fhur School of Business inPine Bluff, Ark. She was married to Murrey J. Grider of Warren, Ark., in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1958. Also preceding her in death was special friend John Overman.

Having retired from the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration-Revenue Department after 30 years of service., sheworked as director of the White Hall Museum 1991-2008. She was elected as the first woman alderman to the White Hall, Arkansas City Council in 1983 and served seven consecutive two year terms. Being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, R.S.V.P., White Hall Chamber of Commerce, she served on the board of the Convalescent Home. She was selected from Arkansas to be in the “Photo of the Century” honoring at least one person from each state born on the Fourth of July between 1900-1999.

Survivors include two sons, Murrey L. Grider of Pocahontas, Ark., and Billy John “BJ” Grider (Vicky) of White Hall, Ark.; grandchildren Joe Grider (Summer), Suzanne Frisby (Norman), Jon Allen Yarbough (Candy) and 10 greatgrandchildren.

WHITTON - Ida L. Ellis, 89, of Whitton passed Tuesday morning at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House. Ida was born March 25, 1923, in Tyronza to the late Eddy Lee and Artie B. Turner Jones. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in the Whitton area, but lived the last 13 years in Wynne.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold W. Jones.
