Therapist is fined in Medicaid fraud

A speech therapist from Warren has been sentenced to three years of probation after pleading no contest to Medicaid fraud, state Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said in a news release.

Karen Carraway, 61, entered the plea to the felony charge Monday and was sentenced by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen, according to the release.

Griffen also fined Carraway $18,000 and ordered her to pay $6,000 in restitution, according to the release.

Carraway provided speech therapy to Medicaid recipients under age 21, the release states.

Last year, a parent of two of Carraway’s clients notified the attorney general that she believed Carraway was continuing to bill the program for services provided to the children even though Carraway had stopped providing those services months earlier, according to the release.

Investigators from the attorney general’s office determined that Carraway submitted multiple false claims to the program from January 2010 through October 2011, the release says. That included 15 claims submitted when Carraway was hospitalized, the release states.
