Accidents kill 3 on state highways

Two Arkansans died Saturday in separate accidents on Arkansas roads, hours after a Texas woman died Friday night after she was hit by a pickup.

Awkii Syvoid Brockman, 34, of Morrilton, was driving a 2008 Hyundai Elantra west on Arkansas 287 just before 4 a.m. Saturday when he drove off the left side of the road and struck a driveway culvert, according to an Arkansas State Police report. He was about two miles east of Morrilton.

The road was dry and clear at the time of the accident, the report said.

Maria Lopez, 41, of Fort Smith, was driving a 2005 Chevy Malibu west on Kelley Highway in Fort Smith about 5:45 a.m. Saturday when she failed to navigate a curve in the road at the 27th Street intersection, according to a state police report. Her car hit a large utility pole on the northwest corner of the intersection, the report said. Road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the accident.

On Friday night, a Texas woman was hit by a truck and killed on Arkansas 7 near Bismarck.

Nicki Stauffer, 29, got out of a parked car on the shoulder of the highway and started walking north about 10:30 p.m., according to a state police report. A 1989 GMC also traveling north then hit Stauffer, who was walking in the roadway, according to the report. She was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m. by the Hot Spring County coroner, the report said.

Karl Bock, 42, of Arkadelphia, driver of the 1989 GMC, was not injured in the accident, according to the report.

Road conditions at the time were dry and clear, the report said.
