LR district hires Burton as deputy superintendent

Marvin Burton, a longtime teacher and administrator in the Little Rock School District, is the district’s new deputy superintendent, a role that has been missing in the district in recent years.

Superintendent Dexter Suggs Sr. recommended Burton and new Chicot Primary Principal Sherry Chambers to the Little Rock School Board during Suggs’ first regular board meeting as chief executive.

Burton, who will earn a base salary of $145,308, has been the district’s associate superintendent for secondary schools but most recently served as the interim superintendent after the resignation of Superintendent Morris Holmes and before Suggs began work July 1.

Burton is a former principal at Henderson Middle School and McClellan High. He started his career in the Little Rock district in 1989 as a science teacher at Hall High.

Chambers is a former assistant principal and interim principal at Chicot Primary School. She has been a teacher and instructional coach in the district since 2001.

The board also rehired Katrina Jones as an assistant principal at Hall High, a job she held from 2005 to 2008 but left to become a principal at eStem Middle and eStem High Public Charter Schools in 2008-2012.

On another matter related to personnel, the board approved the creation of three new positions titled Teacher on Special Assignment. One teacher on special assignment will be assigned to each ofHall, McClellan and J.A. Fair high schools. The job description says the employees will assist with student discipline problems, as well as help in program planning and assisting students in developing skills and attitudes that will foster success.

The position at Fair has not yet been advertised. The Hall and McClellan jobs will be given for at least the forthcoming 2013-14 school year to recently hired football coaches for the schools. The coaches were hired “on binders,” Burton said, meaning they were guaranteed district teaching jobs but were not initially assigned to fill a specific job at a school.
