Fire burns for 1 month at Lowell recycling company

LOWELL — A fire at an Advanced Environmental Recycling and Technologies plant in Lowell has been burning for a month.

Lowell Fire Chief Mike Morris said Friday that the area had been smoldering prior to a blast on Thursday that blew part of the top off a silo.

Fayetteville television station KHOG reports that firefighters are using infrared technology to monitor temperatures inside the facility. Crews are now dismantling the silo.

Morris says the fire doesn't pose a hazard to workers because AERT has installed a nitrogen compression system. The system starves the fire of oxygen.

The chief says his agency has had 19 fire calls at AERT over the past nine years.

AERT CEO Joe Brooks says the company has been in business for 25 years and takes safety seriously.
