Black Tie Affair celebration sews up medical conference

Area health-care professionals shed their lab coats and donned suits and sequins for the Black Tie Affair - the Arkansas Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association’s 120th Celebration Banquet.

Held June 8 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, the event closed out the AMDPA’s two-day Scientific Session & National Medical Association Region V Conference.

Dr. Frances Harris served as mistress of ceremonies for a program that opened with remarks by Cheryl Martin, president of the Little Rock Black Nurses Association of Arkansas;

Dr. Derek Lewis Sr., AMDPA president; and Dr. JoiaCrear-Perry, president of NMA Region V. A special treat came via the Voices of AMDPA, the association choir, which sang Hezekiah Walker’s gospel hit “I Need You to Survive.”

Dr. Joe Hargrove introduced his mentor and the evening’s speaker - Dr. Richard Allen Williams, professor of cardiology and medicine at the University of California at LosAngeles. An author and expert on the subject of racial and ethnic disparities in health care, Williams discussed these disparities along with “the good, the bad, and the ugly” ofhealth-care reform.

The banquet concluded with an awards presentation. Entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Kemistry featuring Nicky Parrish.
