Sherwood meeting set on go-‘wet’ vote

A town-hall meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Sherwood to discuss a possible election in Sherwood and Jacksonville to change alcohol restrictions in certain areas.

The meeting will be in the City Council chambers at Sherwood City Hall, 2201 E. Kiehl Ave.

A special election would be required to allow voters to decide to allow current “dry” areas to become “wet,” meaning to allow alcoholic beverages to be sold in those areas.

A new state law has established procedures to allow a local-option election for alcoholic beverages in defunct voting areas that had previously been voted dry. The meeting will allow for questions and clarifications of new voter boundaries that would be used only for a special election on this issue.

Petitions to call for a referendum will be available for registered voters to sign.

A petition drive has begun in North Little Rock to change a dry pocket in that city’s Park Hill area to become wet after 47 years, an economic-development campaign headed by the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce.
