Now-dead lawyer was ineffective, hirer of hit man argues

An Arkansan serving a life term for hiring a hit man to kill his wife at a Nashville store says his lawyer failed to tell him about a possible plea bargain.
A jury said 68-year-old David Camp hired Harry Surber to shoot Robin Camp at the Family Dollar store in Nashville on Memorial Day 2008.
In court Monday in Nashville, Camp said his now-dead lawyer was ineffective and cost him an additional 20 years in prison.
According to the Texarkana Gazette, Camp said Paul Hoover failed to keep him informed about a potential plea deal in which he would have served 20 years instead of going to trial.
Surber is serving 40 years.
Camp’s sister JoAnn Hicks of Ogden was convicted of conspiracy and is now on parole.

There's a good chance - and this is probably what the attorney thought - that Mr. Camp would have turned down the plea bargain in favor of taking his chances in court. In fact, he may have told Surber that. It will depend on what can be proven that attorney and client agreed to before the plea bargain was offered. Should be interesting to follow.

So he is going to serve until he is 88 instead of 108? Really? Is that really going to matter? He's in for life whether he likes it or not.

Camp gets life without parole for hiring the hit man to kill his wife, but Surber, the actual killer only gets 40 years. In my opinion, they both should have been given life without parole
