Senate to take up override of abortion ban veto

The Arkansas Senate is attempting to override Gov. Mike Beebe’s veto of legislation that would ban most abortions in the state 12 weeks into a pregnancy.

The Senate on Tuesday planned to vote on overriding Beebe’s veto of the measure that would be the strictest abortion ban in the country if enacted. Beebe vetoed the measure Monday because he thought it was unconstitutional and because of the costs of defending the measure in court.

Overriding a governor’s veto in Arkansas takes a simple majority in the House and Senate. It’s unclear when the House would vote on an override.

If lawmakers are successful with their override vote, the ban will take effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns. Lawmakers last week overrode Beebe’s veto of a 20-week abortion ban.
