July trial set for former Trumann police chief

A judge has set a July trial date for a former Trumann police chief and a former detective facing felony drug charges.

Former Trumann Police Chief Tony Rusher and former Detective Erik Willbanks pleaded innocent Monday to two counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraudulent means. Prosecutors accused the pair of stealing prescription drugs from the Trumann Police Department evidence room.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that Circuit Court Judge David Laser scheduled a June 27 pretrial hearing and July 8 trial date for the pair.

Rusher became police chief in March 2009 after the death of former chief Larry Blagg. Before that, Rusher had served as assistant chief for several years. He resigned his post in February 2012.

Trumann Mayor Sheila Walters fired Willbanks last year.
