A power failure in a section of downtown Little Rock has snarled traffic and disrupted businesses Thursday afternoon.

The failure, which began about 11:37 a.m., affected about 1,064 Entergy customers, according to the company's website.

The area without power stretches from East Fourth Street to South Barber Street near the Oakland Fraternal Cemetery and as far west as Scott Street. It also includes portions of Capital Avenue, stretching east to East 15th Street near Security Avenue.

The power failure occurred after two wires on a power line at Ninth and College streets came in contact with each other, causing them to burn out. That caused two additional lines at Ninth Street and Interstate 30 to come in contact, causing additional power failures in the area, according to Entergy spokesman Sally Graham.

Workers estimated that the power would be restored by 3 p.m., Graham said.

Areas near MacArthur Park and the Interstate 30/Interstate 630 interchange are also affected. Non-working traffic lights are causing minor delays.

3:26 p.m. UPDATE

According to the Entergy website, a large portion of the affected area has had its power returned, with about 168 customers still waiting for the lights to come back on.

Power has been restored to all Entergy customers in the area west of I-30, but those to the east of the interstate were still without power as of 3:30 p.m.

Graham added that most of the customers had their power back on, though Entergy is expecting to have all power restored to the area later this afternoon.

4:21 p.m. UPDATE

All power in the affected area has been restored, Graham said. There had previously been 168 still left without power from Thursday morning's outage after customers began getting it back.
