Hot Springs Village woman out for walk killed by bull mastiff

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Authorities say a Hot Springs Village woman was killed when she was attacked by a dog while taking an early morning walk.

Police said 75-year-old Joan Kappen was walking in her neighborhood Thursday morning when she was attacked by a bull mastiff. Hot Springs Village Police Chief Gary Adams said the owner of the dog wasn't home at the time, but her mother had let the animal out of the house.

Adams said the mother heard screams and tried to pull the dog from Kappen. She was unable to do so and went inside to call for help.

Kappen was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital Hot Springs. Adams told The Sentinel-Record that the dog was picked up by animal control and later euthanized.
