RV park to give out 5 stays in contest

North Little Rock’s Riverside RV Park downtown will mark its fifth anniversary by giving away five two-night stays at the park.

Registration ends at noon Tuesday. The drawings to pick five winners will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the RV Park, east of the Interstate 30 bridge. The park is across the Arkansas River from the Clinton Presidential Center and Park in Little Rock.

Entries can be made at the park’s main office, 250 S. Locust St. Winners don’t have to be present to win. Cake and refreshments will be available. The observance is free and open to the public.

The RV Park hosted nearly 13,000 RVs from 2008 through 2012, according to the North Little Rock Advertising and Promotion Commission. The park, which opened Oct. 1, 2008, is managed by the North Little Rock Visitors Bureau.

2 groups honored by commerce board

Union Pacific of Arkansas and Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County have been honored by the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors.

The board named Union Pacific as Business of the Year. Habitat for Humanity was chosen as the Nonprofit Partner for 2013. Both will be recognized at the chamber’s monthly F.Y.I. Membership Luncheon and Chairman’s Awards on Dec. 6 and at the chamber’s annual banquet early next year.

Union Pacific, with an operational hub at 800 Pike Ave. in North Little Rock, is the state’s largest railroad.The railroad also operates the Downing B. Jenks locomotive repair shop in North Little Rock, the largest in its system, employing more than 1,100 workers who do heavy maintenance on a fleet of 7,000 locomotives, according to a chamber news release. North Little Rock is also home to Union Pacific’s second-largest freight car classification yard, according to the news release.

Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that built its first house in Little Rock in 1990, according to the chamber news release. To date, the nonprofit has built and financed houses for more than 100 families in Pulaski County, according to the news release.

The chamber awards are meant to recognize the dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by businesses in the North Little Rock community, according to the chamber’s announcement.

Display, scholarship added by arts group

The nonprofit Thea Foundation, based in North Little Rock, recently announced two new endeavors.

The foundation has added a Fashion Design category to its annual scholarship competition - the sixth category offered to graduating highschool seniors throughout the state. Other categories are visual arts, performing arts, creative writing, film and poetry slam. Scholarships for 30 recipients will total $80,000, according to the foundation.

Winners in the Fashion Design Scholarship Competition will receive $4,000 for first place and $2,500 for second place.

In November, the foundation will begin the first of a new quarterly series of art exhibitions called “The Art Department,” that will include opening receptions aimed at the “young professional community,” according to a foundation news release.

The exhibition will be on display and open to the public Oct. 28-Nov. 22 in the Thea Gallery, 401 Main St.
