State panel votes to codify abortion restrictions

An Arkansas panel has voted to publish two prohibitions on abortion in the state's code, despite an official's concern that the two measures may conflict with each other.

The Code Revision Commission on Tuesday voted to codify the laws banning abortions 12 weeks and 20 weeks into a woman's pregnancy. The measures were enacted earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's veto of the bans.

The panel's move means both restrictions will be published in the state's annotated code. An official with the Bureau of Legislative Research said he believed the two laws were in conflict.

A federal judge in May blocked enforcement of the 12-week ban while she considers a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.
