HomeStyle: Masters of the garden

Wine and cheese aren’t the only good things that improve with age. So does compost. So does a well-planned perennial bed.

And after 25 years of creativity and progress, it’s safe to say that so do the Arkansas Master Gardeners, reports Janet Carson in Saturday's HomeStyle section.

Arkansas Master Gardeners celebrated their 25th anniversary recently with a meeting loaded with tours, lectures and more.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service planted its volunteer program 25 years ago with a class of 30 people from four counties. Today the program engages more than 3,200 volunteers in 65 of the state’s 75 counties.

Their handiwork is visible across the state — from city beautification projects to demonstration gardens at schools and nursing homes, and farmers market projects, educational seminars and annual plant sales. These trained volunteers share their knowledge and spread their passion for gardening everywhere they go.
