7 historic Arkansas properties join national register

Seven Arkansas properties, including the state's first skyscraper, have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, state officials said Friday.

The register is an official list of historically significant properties worthy of preservation. Arkansas Historic Preservation Program Director Frances McSwain said the following sites have been newly added:

• The Hall-Hogan Grocery Store at 1364 Mitchell St. in Conway, a 1948 Craftsman-style building.

• The Walnut Grove Cemetery near Cord in Independence County, established in 1840.

• The Camp House at Aplin in Perry County, a circa-1917 Craftsman-style building.

• The Thomas J. Hankins House at Pelsor in Pope County, a 1929 Craftsman-style building.

• The W.F. and Estelle McWilliams House at El Dorado in Union County, built in 1922 and reflecting the Craftsman, Classical Revival and Mediterranean Revival architecture styles.

• The Paul Laurence Dunbar School Neighborhood District at Little Rock, with buildings dating back to 1890.

• The Southern Trust Building at Little Rock, the first skyscraper in Arkansas, at 10 stories tall, dating to 1906-07.
