Appellate Judge Pittman to hang up robes in 2014

Judge John Pittman said Friday that he will not seek re-election in 2014 after 22 years on the Court of Appeals.

Pittman, whose time on the court is the longest of any other Court of Appeals judge, was first elected in 1992.

“I view my service in the legal profession as one of public trust and serious responsibility. My experience has impressed me with the need for strong, just, and impartial court officials. This has guided me in fulfilling my duties on the bench,” Pittman said in a statement. “I am honored and humbled to have a career in the noble work of the law.”

Pittman, 74, was elected to an eight-year term in 2006. His district includes Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Cross, Greene, Lonoke, Mississippi, Monroe, Poinsett, Prairie, White and Woodruff counties.

Pittman graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1968 and practiced law in Helena-West Helena until he was elected chancery judge of the 1st Judicial District in 1982.

No candidates have yet announced for Pittman’s seat in the 2014 race.

Campaign committees established for candidates in next year’s judicial elections cannot accept contributions until Nov. 21.
