Jackson County inmate dies in custody

An inmate in the Jackson County jail went into cardiac arrest while in custody and died a short time later, authorities said Monday.

Anthony Maurice Reeves, 37, of Jonesboro was taken from the jail to Harris Hospital in Newport, where he died shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday.

The Jackson County sheriff's office said in a statement that Reeves was "discovered in cardiac arrest" about 45 minutes earlier. Jail staff performed CPR before he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Reeves' body will be sent to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy, the statement said.

Reeves had been moved from Craighead County to Jackson County on an outstanding warrant for failure to comply with a court order.

Police say the death remains under investigation.
