Owl facts and figures

Some owl statistics:

Among most owls, the adult female is 25 percent larger than the male.

Owls live all over the world except Antarctica, a few islands in the Pacific and Greenland.

Owls are distinguished from other birds of prey by their eyes. An owl’s eyes are on the front of the face, while a hawk’s are on the sides of the head - but both have keen vision.

Many species of owls have eyes that are yellow.

Most owls are nocturnal, but a few are active during the day.

Most owls live in habitat where there are many trees, but some live in open fields and nest on the ground.

Ornithologists are somewhat in doubt about the number of each species of owl that exists because so many of the owls can only be counted by their nighttime hooting. It is known that the number of individual birds among all species of owls is in decline.
