BASEBALL Cabrera has surgery

Miguel Cabrera underwent muscle repair surgery Tuesday and the Detroit slugger is expected to be ready for spring training. The Tigers revealed after the season that Cabrera had been limited down the stretch by a tear in his groin. He still hit .348 with 44 home runs and 137 RBI during the season. Cabrera batted .262 with two home runs in 11 postseason games before Detroit lost to Boston in the American League Championship Series. The operation was performed in Philadelphia and the team said Monday that it was successful. Cabrera faces 6-8 weeks of rehabilitation.

BASKETBALL Henderson out 3 games

Mississippi’s Marshall Henderson has been suspended three regular-season games this season, including the first two Southeastern Conference games. The school announced the suspension on Tuesday morning. The 6-2 guard - whose boisterous antics turned him into one of college basketball’s biggest villains - scored more than 20 points per game last season, but was indefinitely suspended in July after police found him with small amounts of marijuana and cocaine during a traffic stop. Henderson was not arrested. Henderson has had both on- and off-the-court issues at Ole Miss. The school said in a statement that Henderson’s suspension is a result of his “conduct during the 2012-13 season, SEC and NCAA Tournaments, and his behavior since the end of the season.” Henderson came to Ole Miss with a history of discipline problems. He was arrested in both 2009 and 2011 and served time in jail after the second arrest because he violated his probation. Ole Miss has said the coaches were aware of Henderson’s past when he signed with the program.

FOOTBALL Virus sidelines Shaw

South Carolina starting quarterback Connor Shaw has missed practice this week due to the same virus that sidelined him at the beginning of last Saturday’s win at Missouri. South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier said Shaw missed Monday’s practice and was unlikely to work out Tuesday as he recovers. He is questionable for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State. Shaw also was coming off a sprained knee when he entered the game against the Tigers in the third quarter and rallied the Gamecocks (6-2, 4-2 SEC) from a 17-point deficit to a 27-24 double-overtime victory. Shaw threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns, earning the SEC’s offensive player of the week honors. Spurrier says backup Dylan Thompson would start against Mississippi State (4-3, 1-2) if Shaw can’t play.

Nick Foles has passed the Im-PACT concussion test and will practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. Foles sustained a concussion in a 17-3 loss to Dallas on Oct. 20. It was his second start filling in for Michael Vick, who re-injured his left hamstring in the first half of a 15-7 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. Matt Barkley finished off both games, and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur says the rookie will share first-team snaps with Foles in practice. Vick’s status remains day to day, though coach Chip Kelly already said it’s unlikely he’ll play at Oakland (3-4) this week. The Eagles (3-5) have lost two in a row and are one game behind the Cowboys (4-4) in the NFC East.

Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Gibson has been placed on injured reserve with a left knee injury, ending his first season with the team. Gibson was hurt in the first half of Sunday’s loss at New England. The slot receiver finished with 30 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Rishard Matthews, who has eight catches this year, will likely assume Gibson’s role in the Dolphins’ sputtering offense. They’ll try to snap a four-game losing streak Thursday against Cincinnati. Gibson signed a $9.78 million, three-year contract with Miami as a free agent last off season.

The Cleveland Browns and Josh Gordon are moving forward together. With rampant trade speculation swirling around Gordon for weeks, the Browns decided to hold on to their talented wide receiver, who has developed into one of Cleveland’s top play makers but whose off-field issues will continue to loom over the team. When the NFL’s 4 p.m. trade deadline arrived Tuesday, the Browns sent out official word that they did not make any deals. On Monday, coach Rob Chudzinski reiterated that the team was not shopping Gordon or any other players. The Browns received calls on a number of players, but did not accept an offer. The 6-3, 225-pound Gordon has 32 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns in six games this season. He was suspended for the first two games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

TENNIS Gasquet advances

Richard Gasquet beat Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Tuesday in the second round ofthe Paris Masters to stay in the race for a World Tour Finals spot. The ninth-seeded Frenchman converted his fifth match point when Verdasco sent a backhand long. Verdasco hit two service winners to save two match points at 6-5 in the second set. The Spaniard then erased seven break points in the final set before dropping serve at 3-all with a wide forehand. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych have already qualified for the tournament in London next week. There are still three spots up for grabs as Andy Murray withdrew from the season-ending event to recover from back surgery. In first-round matches, Grigor Dimitrov rallied past two-time semifinalist Michael Llodra 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, and Spanish lucky loser Pablo Andujar overcame Vasek Pospisil of Canada 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Andujar replaced Gael Monfils in the main draw after the Frenchman pulled out because of a left wrist injury. Marcel Granollers, Ivan Dodig, wild card Nicolas Mahut and qualifier Michal Przysiezny also moved into the second round. Granollers will face top-seeded Rafael Nadal after his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Dmitry Tursunov. Meanwhile, Dodig beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (6), 6-4, Przysiezny defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 7-6 (6), and Mahut downed Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (6), 6-1.

SOCCER Beckham picks Miami

A person with knowledge of the situation says David Beckham has chosen Miami to start a Major League Soccer franchise. The former England captain asked MLS to approve the ownership option in his league contract when he joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because plans for the team have not been made public. Beckham has been mulling the location of an MLS team in anticipation of his new career as a team owner. He left the Galaxy in December after five years and retired from playing in May after four months with Paris Saint-Germain. There are 19 MLS teams and Commissioner Don Garber hopes to expand to 24 by the 2020 season.
