Possessing firearm earns felon 5+ years in prison

A Gurdon man was sentenced to a little more than five years in prison Thursday afternoon after a 2012 dispute resulted in his arrest for unlawfully possessing a gun.

Corey Thornton, 38, was sentenced in federal court in Hot Springs to 63 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty on March 7 to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Thornton will also be under supervised release for three years, authorities said.

Thornton was originally arrested on Sept. 15, 2012 after authorities were called to the scene of a verbal altercation involving an individual with a gun, the release states. Officers searched Thornton and found a loaded pistol in his pocket. He later admitted to being involved in the altercation and to possessing the gun.
