•–––––RAYMOND WILSON BRANTON, was born Oct. 5, 1924 in Corsicana, Texas, and died April 5, 2014 in North Little Rock at the VA Hospital. The oldest of six children, he was blessed with siblings who remained close, caring and supportive of each other all his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie W. and Rachael Wood Branton; as well as two sisters, Mary Rachael Branton and Elizabeth “Betty” Carr; a brother, Edgar A. Branton; his son, Raymond Branton Jr.; as well as a beloved granddaughter, Sarah Rachael Bakken.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Lois Walker Branton. Their marriage was on Jan. 1, 1949, while both were students at the U of A, Fayetteville, Ark. Besides his wife, Ray is survived by his children: Laurel Bakken and husband Kerry of Sheridan, and Amelia Kay Branton of North Little Rock; two grandchildren, Peter M. Branton of New York and Madeline Branton of Maine; his brother, Lonnie Branton; sister, Marjorie Harshfield; and a large number of nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters in law; as well as a host of friends.

Educated in the Little Rock Public Schools, Raymond was a fifth generation Arkansan in the construction industry. The first Branton Bros. Construction Company was started in Magnolia, Ark. in the 1840s. A member of the carpenters union before entering the Marines in World War II, Ray was the first member of his family to become an architect.

Ray’s service in World War II was in the South Pacific on KWAJALEIN ATOLL, located in the Marshall Islands. He was a member of the commanding general’s staff of the 5th Marine Air Wing.

Entering the U of A to study architecture in the fall of 1946, Raymond became a lst Lt. of Squadron E of the ROTC AIR Force Cadet training platoon. He was also a member of Theta Tau, engineering fraternity. Graduating in 1951 with a degree in architecture, he did his apprenticeship with the architectural firm of Barron, Heinberg and Bracato in Alexandria, La. An active member of the Exchange Club for more than 30 years, Ray first joined while living in Alexandria.

Returning to Little Rock to take the architectural licensing exam, he opened a solo practice in the Little Rock area. Certified nationally by NCARB, Ray was licensed in Arkansas and the five surrounding states. Early in his practice he dedicated his work to the Lord and was successful in seeing his designs built for more than 150 churches in Arkansas and five other states. The outstanding design of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, Roosevelt and Main, Little Rock, was one of the last projects he completed. He was very proud of his designs and fundraising work for the prison chapels at the Cummins and Tucker Units of the Arkansas Department of Correction.

A member of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Ray served as president of the chapter in 1970. He also served as president of the Little Rock Exchange Club. He was on the Salvation Army Board for more than 25 years, president several years, and was named a Lifetime member of the Board. While a member of the Pulaski Business Men’s Assn., he was chairman of the Miss Little Rock Pageant and the March of Dimes Telerama (co-sponsored by KATV).

Confirmed at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Dec. 12, 1965, Ray served in the late 1960s as head usher at the Family Service.

An avid fisherman, Ray spent many week-ends on Lake Ouachita bass fishing and proudly exhibiting photos of his big catches.

Ray was known for his dry sense of humor, generous spirit, honesty and love of family and friends. He will be remembered by the number of young architectural students he employed during summer months, whom he encouraged, showing them tools of the trade and practicing his brand of patience.

There will be a private family service officiated by Rev. Paul McLain, Sub-Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in NLR with Military Honors. The family would like to express their thanks to the visiting doctors, nurses and aides from the VA who cared for Ray for several years at home and to the nurses and staff of Unit 1B at the North Little Rock VA Hospital. •–––––“When Did I Love Him Most?” was the name of an article in a magazine. I couldn’t say then. I couldn’t say now. I was giddy that I had had this child. It never wore off.

GEORGE DAVID GREENE IV was born Sept. 19, 1959 and would shape many lives. He would lead his siblings and trail blaze his future.

He died April 8, 2014. The lives he touched went from his family to classmates at St. Patrick School and Catholic High School, onto finish college at UALR and then the endless wonderful world of camping in his beautiful Arkansas. Even as his road became harder and harder with his illness, he charmed his nurses, as he had his friends along the way. He simply used up all his heart.

His working life would take him from the Little Rock Zoo where he met his beautiful wife, Marie, who has remained a treasured friend. George traveled Europe twice, but it was his native Arkansas in camping and backpacking that held his heart. Later he would criss-cross the state as a Land Resource Specialist and see firsthand all the beauty of Arkansas.

George is predeceased by his father, David Roger Greene; and youngest brother, Kelley Kirksey Greene; maternal grandparents, Mary Garrett Stormes and Henry McDowell Gore; paternal grandparents, George David Greene and Johnnie Kirksey Greene. He is survived by his mother, Gaye Garrett Greene; and brother, James Benjamin Garrett Greene and his wife, Alice; sisters, Victoria “Torre” Rayburn Greene and Mary Smiley; uncle, Michael Stormes and wife Susie; three aunts, Martha Jo Puzio and husband Richard, Shannon Stormes and Ellen Pack; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

A private service has been held. Please address guestbook comments to www.arkansasfuneralcare.com.

•–––––WILLIAM HENRY “BILL” TRICE III, 67, of Little Rock, Ark. passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 after a lengthy illness. He was born on Nov. 19, 1946 in Vicksburg, Miss., the only son of Rev. William Henry Trice Jr. and Dr. Ethel Preston Trice.

Bill graduated from Fayetteville High School before earning a BA and JD from the University of Arkansas. A University Cheerleader and a brother in the Acacia Fraternity, he loved the Razorbacks and his life on the mountain.

Bill always seemed to have a black flare pen and yellow legal pad on him. He began his law career as Deputy Prosecutor for Pulaski County before entering into private practice with Senator Max Howell and Dale Price, to whom he is ever grateful for teaching him about life, politics, and the law. He served as president in the early days of the Arkansas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and on the Board of Governors of the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association. He represented the Arkansas State Medical Board since 1989, as well as the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners and Arkansas State Board of Optometry since 1991. The members of these boards were totally dedicated to improving the delivery of good health care to the citizens of Arkansas and it was his honor to help them. Accomplishments aside, Bill was a “street lawyer” in his heart and practicing out of their offices across from the courthouse was a joy with partners like Kevin O’Dwyer, Win Wilson and, most importantly, his long time friend Ron Hope.

Bill might have enjoyed his practice the most when the law intersected with politics. A die-hard Democrat and political junkie, he loved working the lobbies of the State Legislature with his friend Paul Berry as well as diving into a campaign. He especially cherished his front-row seat to history as an Arkansas Traveler for the campaigns of our 42nd President.

Bill served in Active Duty and the Reserves of the United States Army and the Arkansas Army National Guard from which he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 26 years. He maintained great respect for those who serve our country so selflessly.

He was a life-long member of the Masonic Fraternity, having received the 33 Degree of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, the Red Cross of Constantine of the York Rite, and the Medal of Honor of the Grand Lodge of Arkansas. He was also a member and served as attorney for the Scimitar Shrine Temple and he was Director of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 12.

Bill loved to spend time in New York City, seeing Broadway shows and eating spaghetti with red clam sauce. He loved traveling anywhere with his wife and their dear friends Jane and Bill Arthurs, often on their shared wedding anniversaries.

But the joy and color of Bill’s life was experienced most when directing, choreographing, writing, or performing in productions at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, the Community Theatre of Little Rock, The Weekend Theatre, the Barn Players in Rumson, N.J., and the Arkansas Bar Association’s “Gridiron” shows. He appreciated all who ever worked on any of his shows, in any way, for sharing their talents and energies.

A lifelong Christian, his relationship with Christ was learned and made possible through worship and service in the Episcopal Church since law school. He was a long time member of the choirs at Trinity Cathedral and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden of St. Margaret’s. He enjoyed spending a week every summer at Subiaco Abbey with the staff of the AIC Choir Camp.

Bill was preceded in death by his father and very recently by his mother as well as his life-long friend, Gary Barket. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 38 years, Judy Edwards Trice; as well as three children, Kathryn Pryor of Little Rock, Jeffrey Pryor of Fort Smith, and William “Will” Trice of New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Aaron Pryor of Fayetteville, Andrew Pryor of Fort Smith, and Robert Pryor of Little Rock; sister-in-law, Carlyn Yancey; and brother-in-law, Samuel Edwards and wife Cloyes; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as adopted family members, Leslie Minelli and John Pettengill. The family deeply thanks Drs. Joseph Beck, Lynn Davis, and Kevin Hefner for their dedicated service, as well as special caregiver David Williams Jr. Bill’s honorary pallbearers will be William Arthurs, Dr. Joseph Beck, Paul Berry, Samuel Edwards, Earnest Franklin, Ronald Hope, Dr. Ray Jouett, Kevin O’Dwyer, Everett Rowland, and Ralph “Win” Wilson.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 14 from 5-7 p.m. at Doe’s Eat Place in Little Rock. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church followed by a columbarium interment at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, both in Little Rock.

Bill cherished the Church as well as the performing arts in Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (for which he served on the Board of Directors), the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, and/or The Weekend Theatre. •–––––PINE BLUFF — Gail Smithson Morschheimer, 74, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, April 11, 2014. Gail was born in Hartshorne, Okla., on Aug. 12, 1939 to Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Smithson. As a youngster, she began ballet lessons with Mrs. Jane Stamps of Durant, Okla. The eight-year-old knew immediately she had found her niche. Her father’s career took the Smithson family to Fort Smith when Gail turned 10 years of age. At first she was heartbroken but then learned that, providentially, Mrs. Stamps’ career also took her to Fort Smith.

During Gail’s junior high years she had the privilege of studying with noted dancers such as Lola Menzelli of Chicago and Marina Svetlova of New York. Her favorite summers were spent in Dance Camp of Oklahoma where renowned teachers throughout the country gathered to teach and exchange artistic methods.

In 1957, after graduating from Fort Smith High School (now Northside) Gail chose Tulsa University for three reasons: It was a wonderful academic school, it had a fabulous dance department, and she was chosen as assistant ballet teacher at the Damaroff Ballet School. Later that summer, Gail met the love of her life, Conner Morschheimer, while he was visiting a fraternity brother in Fort Smith. On Nov. 29, 1958 Gail and Conner married. They soon moved to Memphis for Conner to attend Murdoch’s Cotton School. In the autumn of 1959 the young couple moved to Pine Bluff and the following June they welcomed their first daughter, Stacy. Three years later another daughter, Julia, completed their family.

Gail started the Morschheimer School of Dance in Pine Bluff in the early sixties and enjoyed teaching youngsters of all ages. One of her fondest memories was her production of The Nutcracker in 1969 where the Zebra football players danced all the male roles.

•–––––TEMPLE, Texas — Cloreda Laverne Price “Crickett” Shannon passed away gently April 9, 2014, at Arbor House in Temple, Texas. She was born at home in Pickles Gap, Faulkner County, Ark., Feb. 8, 1932, the firstborn child of Roy Howard and Minnie Mae Reece Price. Her mother made up the name “Cloreda”; she acquired the nickname of “Crickett” during elementary school (from Dickens’ Cricket on the Hearth). The name fit her well. While she was involved in student government throughout her schooling, her campaign slogan was “On your ticket, vote for Crickett.”

Though she was raised on the family farm, she really put her heart into her schoolwork, going home each summer with an armload of books from the school library. She spent an entire summer reading the complete works of Charles Dickens.

She retained her ‘only child’ status until she was nine years old, when her sister, Sylvia Christine (“Chris”) was born. She used to pull Chris in a red wagon on the long trek to the mailbox at the main road.

She was a gifted student and graduated as the Valedictorian of her Vilonia High School class. Crickett attended college at the nearby Arkansas State Teachers College, the first person in her family to pursue a college degree. She was involved in a wide range of campus activities, including student government, choir, and the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She was President of her sorority, the first female president of the Senior Class, and a member of all organizations on campus, minus the Square Dancers. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double major in English and History.

She married Robert Fudge Shannon on July 4, 1953. He had just been accepted to the University of Arkansas Medical School in Little Rock, so that is where the young couple made their home. Crickett taught English at Pulaski Heights Junior High, and then at the newly re-opened Central High. Their daughter, Shawn was born in 1955, followed by son, Scott in 1963. When asked about what she would do differently if she could do her life over again, she said she would have had two or three more children; she believes she had “good kids.”

Even as a young mother with a full time job and a husband in medical school, she continued to study. She earned her Masters in English from the University of Arkansas in 1958.

She “retired”"su from teaching when the young family moved for a couple of years to Fort Bragg, N.C., for Dr. Shannon to serve in the Army. Both there and when they returned to Little Rock, she was significantly involved in civic and social service. She was instrumental in setting up a library and was a long-term president of the Panhellenic Council of Little Rock.

She continued to be an educator outside of the classroom, frequently designing educational experiences for her two children and arranging for them to have amazing opportunities to learn. She hosted many “bunkin’” parties and cared for the stray cats and dogs that found their way to the house on Shamrock. Over the years, she ‘adopted’ several older adults, caring for them in practical ways.

Her favorite pastimes were gift-giving, reading, eating, sleeping, and working with the Stock Market. She nurtured in her children a love for reading and a familiarity with libraries. Her favorite author was John Steinbeck. Her favorite holiday was Christmas (she is a famous gift-giver!). She was the favorite human of many cats. Her life motto was “Live and let live.” Her favorite place to travel was the Ozarks.

She was a Baptist whose favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23 and hymn was “Rock of Ages.” When she was a child, she would sit on the piano bench and turn pages for her mother while she played hymns at church. She has enjoyed her affiliation with Pulaski Heights Baptist Church and Living Way Four Square Gospel Church, both in Little Rock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister; former husband; and son. She is treasured and missed by her daughter, Shawn Shannon of Belton, Texas; niece, Brenda Hollis of Atlanta, Ga.; multiple Price cousins in the Conway/Vilonia area of Arkansas; the staff of Arbor House of Temple; and many dear friends. She is remembered for her wit, intelligence, and loyal friendship.

If you would like to honor her in a special way, donate a book to your local library in her memory, make a contribution to Heifer Project International (1 World Avenue, Little Rock, Ark., 72202), or give to Alzheimer’s research through the Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimer’s Association Capitol of Texas Chapter, 512-241-0420, 3520 Executive Center Drive No. 140, Austin, Texas 78731). Special memories of Crickett can be shared with Dr. Shawn Shannon, 217 West 7th Avenue, Belton, Texas 76513.
