Program to improve Arkansas highways to begin

By The Associated Press

This article was published April 16, 2014 at 7:11 a.m.

The Arkansas Highway Commission and the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department will officially begin a highway construction program with a proclamation ceremony.

The ceremony will be Wednesday in Little Rock to mark the first of 31 highway projects to be constructed under the $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program. The program is funded with a 10-year, half-cent sales tax that was approved by voters in 2012.

The first project is a six-mile portion of the new Bella Vista Bypass from Bentonville to Hiwasse in Northwest Arkansas. The Bella Vista Bypass is a multiphased project to construct two lanes of an ultimate 19-mile four-lane Interstate.

The other 30 projects include widening and improvement to highways statewide.

Why celebrate the awarding of a Bella Vista Bypass contract with a ceremony in... Little Rock???!!!??? A past Highway Commission actually held a special bid opening in Mountainburg (the first ever outside of Little Rock) for the Bobby Hopper Tunnel. Why couldn't they at least had this photo-op ceremony somewhere in Benton County? (And I'm in Little Rock so I'm certainly no NWA promoter.)

RBB, there are not a lot of things that make sense with the AHTD in my humble opinion. Lots of bungling, excuses, and misplaced priorities as far as I'm concerned.

RBB, the Northwest Arkansas Council wanted to have this event in LR to coincide with a Highway Commission meeting where all the commissioners would be present - and it was really a kickoff of the entire program, which is statewide. The first project just happens to be in NW Arkansas. There will be a groundbreaking on site in the near future.

outinthesticks, we'd love to talk to you about your opinion to see if there is anything we might clarify for you, or to talk to you about our priorities and what we're working toward.
