Heading out to homesteading school

RISON — More than 150 like-minded people, folks interested in gardening and homesteading, spent a cold and windy spring day earlier this month learning how to do it themselves at the South Arkansas Homesteading Conference, Frank Fellone writes in HomeStyle.

Homesteading is an effort to be self-sufficient, especially through subsistence agriculture. That’s where the gardening comes in, and where people at the conference learned about seed propagation and tomato grafting, and about square-foot gardening.

Of special interest was the square-foot gardening method, the fundamentals of which were explained by Les Walz, cooperative extension agent for Cleveland County.
