High schools set to face off in Quiz Bowl

Arkansas high school quiz bowl teams will compete Saturday in the annual Arkansas Governor’s Academic Competition to be broadcast live by the Arkansas Educational Television Network.

“Quiz Bowl 2014,” featuring two teams from each of the seven high school conferences, will be shown in two parts.

The first round of matches beginning at 9 a.m. will include in order of appearance:

6A - Greenwood vs. Benton.

1A - Haas Hall Academy in Fayetteville vs. Lisa Academy in North Little Rock.

2A - Cedar Ridge High in Newark vs. Hazen.

7A - Fort Smith Southside vs. Cabot.

The second round of matches beginning at 1:30 p.m. will include in order of appearance:

4A - Arkadelphia vs. Maumelle.

5A - Watson Chapel in Jefferson County vs. Morrilton.

3A - Episcopal Collegiate in Little Rock vs. Fountain Lake High in Garland County.

The public is invited to be part of the audience for the event at the AETN studios, 350 South Donaghey Ave. in Conway. Audience members will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Spectators will be admitted through the Sesame Street entrance and should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. for the first round and 1 p.m. for the second round.

The Quiz Bowl has been featured on AETN since 1985. In a series of questions, players must display their knowledge in literature, math, science, history, art, music and economics. Teams from across the state compete for scholarships and the chance to represent Arkansas in national tournaments.

The Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association holds regional tournaments around the state during March. The top two teams from each classification advance to the State Conference Finals.
