Happy trails: Sugarloaf Mountain

A lone, wind-twisted pine clings to the base of the cliff at Heber Springs' Sugarloaf Mountain.
The hike to the top is short, but steep, and climbers must be in good shape to make the final rocky ascent. The view is still impressive from the trail around the rim.

SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN, HEBER SPRINGS

Location: Trailhead parking is on Trailhead Road, south off Wilburn Road, 0.74 mile east of Bypass Road.

Length: All the well-maintained trails added together equal about 2.3 miles.

Main attractions: For the sturdy and limber, the climb to the very top of Sugarloaf offers a magnificent view. The last section up a narrow crevice on the bluff is steep and a little scary. The Base and Hidden Pond trails, however, offer lovely nonscary walks in the woods.

Hazards: Climb to the top at your own risk. There are no railings and it’s a long way down. Well, long enough.

Dog, bike, tyke friendly? No bikes. Keep dogs and smaller fry on the dirt trails. However, I saw young boys and their dads scamper to the top of the bluff like spiders.
