Police say driver was no kidnapper

An incident in which a 16-year-old girl said someone tried to kidnap her Monday turned out to be a misunderstanding because of a language barrier, Benton police said Thursday.

The girl told officers she was near South and Main streets in Benton on Monday morning when a man driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup tried to coax her into the truck. A passer-by yelled at the man, who then drove off, according to the initial account.

But detectives concluded no charges were warranted after "extensively interviewing the victim, a possible suspect and witnesses," according to a department news release.

The man initially identified as a suspect "spoke Spanish and couldn't adequately communicate his question to the juvenile," the news release said.

Also, detectives could find no evidence that "force, or the threat of force or intimidation" was used in the incident, according to the release.
