A Little Rock woman has been charged in a two-vehicle crash that killed one person in May.

Amber Wells, 18, was charged Monday with negligent homicide in the May 21 death of Leroy Patterson.

Wells was driving a Pontiac Vibe east on Cantrell Road approaching Ranch Road at about 1:16 p.m. when she veered across three lanes into oncoming traffic, police reported. Her car struck a Kia Sephia driven by Patterson head-on.

Patterson, 88, of Roland was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center, where he died in surgery from blunt force trauma.

Wells and a passenger, Abby Smith, 17, were hospitalized at UAMS Medical Center.

The teens told investigators that a white Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe had attempted to enter their lane and forced their vehicle into oncoming traffic, according to a police affidavit.

But a witness who was driving behind Wells told police that she didn't see any such vehicle, according to the affidavit. And investigators found no evidence that Wells applied the brakes or made evasive movements, the affidavit says.

Wells is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3.
