Hooks jump on Travelers early

A night after scoring two runs in the ninth inning to beat Arkansas 2-1, the Corpus Christi Hooks scored seven runs in the first four innings to defeat the Travelers 8-5 on Saturday night before an announced crowd of 6,408 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Telvin Nash started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning to score Colin Moran.

In the second inning, Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run single to score Brandon Meredith and Rene Garcia to make it 4-0. Moran's RBI single scored Delino DeShields Jr., to give the Hooks a 5-0 lead.

In the fourth, Moran hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field that scored Carlos Perdomo for a 6-0 Corpus Christi lead. After Michael Brady replaced Kramer Sneed (7-10), Nash singled to left-center to score DeShields to make it 7-0.

Arkansas closed the deficit to 7-4 in the sixth on two-run home runs by Brian Hernandez and Anderson De La Rosa. Hernandez's home run down the left-field line scored Alex Yarbrough, who had singled. After Kaleb Cowart reached on a fielder's choice, De La Rosa hit his home run to left.

Corpus Christi made it 8-4 in the eighth when DeShields singled to center to score Garcia.

In the ninth, Arkansas' Maikol Gonzalez singled to right to score Drew Heid to finish the scoring.

Brady Rodgers (5-11) picked up the victory despite allowing 4 runs on 8 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Mitchell Lambson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits for his first save of the season.

Sneed allowed 7 runs on 6 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Moran led the Hooks offensively, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI. Nash went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. Garcia and Teoscar Hernandez both had two hits.

Brian Hernandez went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI for the Travelers.
