Fort Smith OKs $1.5 million for medical college

FORT SMITH — Fort Smith has approved spending $1.5 million on infrastructure for a new medical college.

The Times Record reported that the city board of directors unanimously allocated the funds Tuesday night. It also authorized a grant application that seeks an additional $1.5 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

Plans for the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine were announced in February. The 200-acre campus is expected to open as soon as 2016.

The city's infrastructure work will include road improvements as well as water and sewer line relocations.

City Administrator Ray Gosack said the college will improve the region's health care "immensely."
