Texarkana tax repeal doesn't make ballot

TEXARKANA — Texarkana city officials say a resident's effort to repeal a hotel and restaurant sales tax will not be put to a vote in November.

The Texarkana Gazette reported City Clerk Heather Soyars said Tuesday that the petition is invalid because of how it is worded. She said it's missing items required by the Arkansas constitution.

The petition gained about 1,400 signatures from people who wanted to repeal the 2 percent tax.

The newspaper said the city attorney couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.

The petition's filer said he is "disappointed" in the city's decision and that he plans to refile the petition and seek a special election.
