Oaklawn has more applications than space available

HOT SPRINGS — Oaklawn Park says that a month ahead of the live racing season it has received more applications for stalls than the number of stalls available.

Racing Secretary Pat Pope said the track can accommodate about 1,500 horses. It has received applications for more than 2,800 horses.

Pope said he is not only pleased with the number of applications but also the quality of the horses mentioned.

The track credits a larger set of purses available for the interest. Oaklawn said its purses next year will total a record $23 million.

The barn area opened Nov. 10 and the track opened for training Nov. 17. Live racing starts Jan. 9.
