Charleston QB Gatorade Player of Year

Charleston senior quarterback Ty Storey has been named Arkansas’ Gatorade Player of the Year.

Storey, who has orally committed to the University of Arkansas, is the first Gatorade Player of the Year to be chosen from Charleston, a Class 3A school.

Storey, 6-3, 220 pounds, has led the Tigers to a 12-0 record and a berth in the semifinals of the Class 3A state playoffs. He has completed 253 of 373 passes for 3,573 yards with 49 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 576 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Storey has a 3.71 grade-point average. He has signed a financial aid agreement to enroll at Arkansas and is expected to graduate from high school later this month and begin classes in the spring semester in Fayetteville.

UCA’s Campbell going into NJCAA Hall of Fame

Central Arkansas Coach Steve Campbell will be going into the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame.

Campbell, who completed his first year at Central Arkansas with a 6-6 record, was the head coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast College from 2004-2013 where he had an 88-22 record with no losing seasons. In 2007, he had a 12-0 season and won the school’s first national championship since 1986. His teams won three MACJC championships, made six bowl games and had six players make NFL rosters. He was named MACJC Coach of the Year three times and was named NJCAA Coach of the Year in 2007. He also served as the NCAA president from 2011-2012.

Other inductees include Arizona Western running back Chuck Muncie, who played nine seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers; running back Zack Crockett from Hinds (Miss.), who later transferred to Florida State and played for Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Oakland and Tampa Bay in the NFL; Arizona Western linebacker Willie Hall, who later played at USC and for New Orleans and Oakland in the NFL; and the 2001 Kilgore (Texas) Rangers, which went 12-0.
