Suspected shooter of girl, 14, jailed

Little Rock police arrested a man Tuesday and charged him with first-degree battery in the shooting last week of a 14-year-old girl.

Kevin Blackmon, 18, of 3116 Bishop St. in Little Rock, surrendered to police at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Northwest Police Substation, 10001 Kanis Road, according to a police report. Blackmon was also charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at Wakefield Elementary School, 75 Westminister Drive. The girl was shot in the abdomen, with the bullet exiting through her lower back, police said. She was transported to Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Blackmon was transported to the Pulaski County jail. No bail had been set as of Tuesday night.

LR police arrest victim of stabbing

While Little Rock police continue searching for the knife-wielder in a Tuesday morning stabbing outside of the Albert Pike Residence Hotel, the victim has been arrested, according to a police report.

Little Rock police said that officers were dispatched to the hotel at 5:34 a.m., where a security guard said a woman had told them that a man had been stabbed outside the hotel.

Akym Avery, 39, of 1221 Reservoir Road, Apartment 409 in Little Rock, told police he was the victim but didn't want to report the incident, but he said an unknown woman saw his injury and called 911 against his wishes. Officers observed that Avery had a small cut on his left side under his arm. Avery refused medical attention, but an officer recognized Avery from a wanted poster and took him into custody.

Avery was transported to the Pulaski County jail, where he was being held on second-degree sexual assault charges. No bail had been set as of Tuesday evening.

Police: Screams stop robbery try

A would-be armed robber was startled by the screams of his 69-year-old victim, and he fled the scene without robbing the woman, Little Rock police said.

The victim was walking up the steps of her Capitol View residence around 8:20 p.m. Monday when she was approached by a man, according to the police report. The robber pulled out a silver revolver and demanded money before the woman started "screaming hysterically." The woman told police that she believed her reaction startled the man, and he ran north toward Markham Street without robbing her.

The gunman is described as a 5-foot-8, 180-pound black man, approximately 20 to 25 years old. He wore a dark shirt and dark pants.

Gunman holds up LR tobacco store

Little Rock police are investigating the armed robbery of a tobacco store Monday night.

Officers responded about 6:38 p.m. to Tobacco Outlet at 1508 S. University Ave. Two employees told police that a man with a hood covering his face had entered the store, pulled out a gun and demanded money, according to a police report.

The man threatened that the holdup was "gonna be a murder," the employees told police. They removed an unknown amount of cash from their registers and placed it into bags. The man fled after taking the money and telling the employees to lie on the floor and count to 200, according to the report.

No injuries were reported.
