Purdue starts fast, keeps pouring it on

PURDUE 87, ARKANSAS STATE 46

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Kendall Stephens made six consecutive three-point attempts during the first half Wednesday night as Purdue defeated Arkansas State 87-46.

Stephens did not start but was 6 of 6 from behind the three-point line as he scored all of his 18 points in the first half. The Boilermakers shot 65.5 percent during the opening 20 minutes and led 52-18 going into the break. Purdue (8-2) was 8 of 10 from behind the three-point line in the first half.

Dakota Mathias and A.J. Hammons added 10 points each for the Boilermakers.

Arkansas State (2-3), which had won two in a row, had five turnovers and a missed shot among its first six possessions as it fell behind 11-0. The Red Wolves did not score in the game's opening 6:02.

The Boilermakers' reserves scored 26 points in the first half, making 10 of 16 field-goal attempts. ASU, which was 7 of 32 from the field in the first half, got only four points from its reserves in the first half and turned over the ball eight times.

Purdue outrebounded the Red Wolves 21-13 in the opening half. It continued to dominate in the second half as it built a 69-33 lead with 11:31 remaining.
