KAPPA'S DELIGHT

Black and white and crimson

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has a ball at annual formal

What's black and white with a touch of red all over? Sounds like that old riddle whose answer is "a newspaper." But here we mean the annual Black & White Formal Ball for the Little Rock alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, at which guests turned out in black and white attire while fraternity members added red accessories to their tuxedos to reflect the fraternity's official colors, crimson and cream.

Awaiting them Dec. 20 at the Metroplex were light hors d'oeuvres; a dinner of chicken parmesan with marinara sauce or roasted pork loin with mango salsa; an assortment of cooked vegetables; and assorted mini-desserts. Rodney Block and the Real Music Lovers, featuring Bijoux, provided the evening's early entertainment.

During a short program overseen by Rod Himon, polemarch -- or president -- of the chapter, Little Rock Police Sgt. Willie Davis was awarded a $500 check for his Our Kids Program, a free program for black boys and men ages 12-18. Chapter member Darryl "Tate" Swinton was given an award for community service. Adolph "A.D." Washington was recognized in absentia for 50 years as a Kappa. Accepting the award in his stead was Dr. Lee Nayles.

Also recognized were Theron Hightower, Southwestern regional vice president for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and Southwestern regional president Timothy Albert.

Proceeds from the ball will pay for some of the chapter's community projects.
