Shoffner to make Feb. 27 court appearance

Former state Treasurer Martha Shoffner is to make a court appearance later this month to answer a new indictment that charges her with improper spending from her campaign account.

The U.S. attorney's office said Friday that Shoffner is to appear before a magistrate judge on Feb. 27.

Shoffner is scheduled for trial next month on charges she accepted cash payments from a broker to whom she steered state investments.

On Thursday, prosecutors revealed that Shoffner faces 10 counts of mail fraud, in addition to the earlier charges. She is accused of spending $9,800 from her successful 2010 re-election campaign on personal items, such as clothing and cosmetics.

The 69-year-old Shoffner is set for trial on March 3 on her original charges. Her lawyer says he won't likely seek a delay.
