A parolee was shot by police early Monday when officers went to investigate suspicious activity at a construction site in Benton.

Michael Dickson, 34, was taken to Saline Memorial Hospital after being shot once. He was listed in satisfactory condition and will face a number of charges including resisting arrest, commercial burglary and criminal trespassing when he is discharged, authorities said.

Police say it all started shortly before 4 a.m., when officers went to a hotel construction site next to the Benton Events Center and spotted two men inside an equipment trailer.

One of the men, identified as Dickson, "became combative," Benton Police Department Lt. Kevin Russell said in a statement.

"During the physical altercation that ensued, an officer discharged his pistol towards Dickson who was struck once," Russell said. "Dickson made it into his vehicle and proceeded to lead officers on a vehicle pursuit before eventually surrendering near Saline Memorial Hospital."

The officer, who suffered minor injuries during the scuffle, was placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

The other man who was in the trailer, identified by police as 22-year-old Wesley Harris, was arrested after a foot chase.

Harris faces charges of commercial burglary, criminal trespassing, fleeing and first-degree criminal mischief. Dickson faces those charges as well as felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

Online records show Dickson is on supervised parole through 2018.
