A $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor will support the Little Rock Animal Village's effort to build a new facility for housing dogs, officials said Tuesday.

The donation to the Friends of the Animal Village support group will be used toward building a facility for dogs being evaluated to participate in the PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin' program, the city of Little Rock said in a statement.

"This incredibly generous gift to Friends of the Animal Village has sparked a fire inside of everyone involved," Kelsey White, vice president of Friends of the Animal Village Board, said in a news release. "Dreams that we had for our city's shelter, the Little Rock Animal Village, and the animals in their care have become a reality virtually overnight."

The shelter in 2013 had more than 1,600 adoptions with nearly 500 of those taking part in the Rescue Waggin' program, which transports dogs from shelters to areas where they are more likely to be quickly adopted.

The donation will be presented to the shelter at the board of directors meeting Tuesday night.
