EL DORADO — Authorities say a 9-year-old boy who didn't return after he went squirrel hunting in the south Arkansas woods has been found dead.

Union County Sheriff Mike McGough said the body of Hank Bollen of Magnolia was found late Tuesday morning near the border of Union and Columbia counties.

Shreveport television station KSLA reported that the boy had at least one gunshot wound, though authorities haven't said how that happened.

The sheriff said his office was called by wildlife officers who were summoned just before nightfall Monday when the boy hadn't returned home. McGough said Hank had been hunting by himself with a single-shot, .22-caliber rifle.

The body is being sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for an autopsy.

Tragic. Nine years old and hunting by himself with a .22? I have to question the intellegence of the ones who made the decision to permit the boy to go hunting without adult supervision. I thought this was against AGFC Regs.

I hope something positive can come from this (by others learning a lesson from it). A kid does not have the wisdom yet to understand how to be safe with a gun. You can drill it in their head but it just doesn’t “click” for them until they are older. For heaven’s sake, please don’t let your kids handle a weapon without knowledgeable supervision. It’s just not worth the risk.

When I was a young parent I made numerous bad parenting decisions many of them based on the reasoning "I did it when I was his/her age and it worked out OK". Oh, how often I wish I could erase many of those decisions. Of course I don't know why the parents made the decision they did but if they were born and raised in the So. Ark. woodlands, the "I did it when I......" reasoning is feasible. So sad for the family. I've lost a son, it is truly hell on earth.
