Collins signs with Nets, to become 1st openly gay player in NBA

Jason Collins became the NBA's first active openly gay player Sunday, signing a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets.

Collins will join the Nets for their game Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The 35-year-old center revealed at the end of last season that a he is gay, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned.

With a need for another big man, the Nets turned to the 7-foot Collins, who helped them reach two NBA Finals in the early 2000s.

"The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," general manager Billy King said in a statement. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract."

Collins has played 12 NBA seasons, including his first seven with the Nets, when they were in New Jersey and Jason Kidd was their point guard. Kidd is now the Nets' coach and Collins has been a teammate of several other current Nets.

I'll bet the fact that he has been picked up based on his ability instead of excluded based on his sexual orientation just chaps some people to no end, as they trudge off to the dustbin of history.

Who cares? This is just a waste of print space in the sports section.

A 10 day contract makes this even less news worthy... Who gives a rip... The Nets will still suck with him!

Does this mean the cheerleaders can shower with the dudes on the team? Whoa, if dudes that are into other dudes can shower with the dudes, why CAN'T the cheerleaders shower with the dudes on the team? It would be wicked nice to get all lathered up with the Laker Girls. Just call me a male lesbian. Whoa, that's radical deep.

Our grand kids kids will say "once there was a group call the Tea Party" they use to go to political rallies with a AR-15 and a Glock, the were not for our universal healthcare we have today, they proposed self deportation and were against the "Dream Act", they wanted to go back Jim Crow days, they wanted the US to interfere with the governments of other countries, they were at war with women rights, they wanted to funk up our water and air, they wanted people to have to keep working for $7.25 per hour without benefits, is it any wonder they went the way of the WHIG party?

Amen, 23cal. I love how the usual suspects claim to not care about this, yet can't wait to post how much they "don't care."

Typical.
