Body discovered in Arkansas River in Pope County

ATKINS — Authorities are investigating after a man's body was discovered in the Arkansas River in Pope County over the weekend.

Pope County Sheriff Aaron Duvall said the body was found in the river Saturday near the Sweeden Island Park area. Duvall told The Courier that there was no identification on the body, but authorities did recover a pair of bluejeans and a cellphone.

Duvall said the body will be sent to the Arkansas medical examiner's office in Little Rock for identification. But, the sheriff said, there's no indication that the body belongs to Michael Shane Caldwell, who's been missing since a Jan. 12 traffic stop and was last seen trying to swim away from Arkansas State Police in the Arkansas River.
