Rice-grower event sets farm-bill talk

Agricultural policy expert Vernie Hubert will discuss the newly enacted farm bill Wednesday at a meeting sponsored by the Arkansas Rice Growers Association at the Brinkley Convention Center.

Hubert, who has worked for both the U.S.

Senate and House agriculture committees in a career spanning more than 25 years with the federal government, will be one of several speakers who will talk about the commodity provisions of the new farm bill. He works for Cornerstone Government Affairs in Washington, D.C.

Also appearing at the event will be Jarrod Hardke, an agronomist with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture who will talk about rice production, and attorney Paul Byrd, who will discuss legal matters important to farmers. Greg Yielding of the Rice Growers Association will provide an update on efforts to open the Chinese market to U.S. rice exports.

HP to host 2nd fair on jobs in Conway

Hewlett Packard will conduct its second career fair today and Wednesday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Conway.

The event supports Hewlett Packard’s yearlong recruitment efforts to add 200 jobs in Conway.

The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wednesday. Candidates are encouraged to create a profile at www.hp.com/ jobs before attending the event.

Participants who plan to attend the career fair are asked to register for specific sessions in advance at http://bit.ly/ MXy4eq.

The positions Hewlett Packard is filling include software developers, business analysts, software development managers and application production support.

Arkansas Index falls 0.05 to end 318.89

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, slipped 0.05 to 318.89 Monday.

Eleven stocks advanced and six declined.

First Federal Bancshares and Home Banc-Shares each rose about 2.5 percent in average trading.

Shares of Dillards Inc.

and J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. fell.

Volume for the index was 21.9 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
