Early voting to begin in Yell County tax election

DANVILLE — Early voting begins Tuesday in a Yell County special election on a sales tax increase that would fund a new county jail.

Registered voters can begin casting ballots Tuesday at the county clerk's offices in Danville and Dardanelle in the special election is set for Jan. 14. The county is asking voters to approve a 1 percent sales tax increase to fund the construction and operations of a new $7 million jail.

Yell County has two county seats in Dardanelle and Danville, and both cities have detention centers.

The Courier reports the county wants to build a new detention center because the jails in Danville and Dardanelle don't meet state standards.

The new facility would be located in Danville and contain 75 beds with room to expand if needed.
