•–––––Family and friends mourn the loss of KYLE KENNETH BERRY of Roland, Ark., who left this world on Jan. 3, 2014.

He was born on May 20, 1958, to James and Nancy Berry of Oklahoma City. Kyle was a graduate of Oklahoma City University and University of Central Arkansas and a math teacher at Sylvan Middle School.

Kyle was a man of many talents. He enjoyed music with his son, James, especially on their road trips. He loved muscle cars and was a gun enthusiast.

He always made you smile, made you laugh and brought a big kid attitude to the party. Kyle loved the outdoors, spending time pursuing his hobbies of hunting and fishing or enjoying good times around a bonfire. Most of all, Kyle enjoyed spending time with his family, where he was the proud Grand PoohBah at family events.

Kyle is survived by wife, Kerri; children, Rachel Hurst and her husband, Justin, of Maumelle, Jennifer Wilson and her husband, Jonathan, of Jonesboro, James Berry of Bryant; sister, Brenda Berry; bonus children, Allison, Justin and Kylie Blankenship; and two beautiful grandchildren, Byron Hurst and Lyla Wilson.

•–––––CARL GURTLER, 92, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, a resident of Jacksonville, Ark., and former resident of Birmingham, Ala. Born June 1, 1921, in Cumberland, Md. Beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

Preceded in death by father and mother, Irma Elwin Osbourne Gurtler and William Carl Gurtler; wife, Florence Morgan Gurtler; brother Charles Gurtler; sisters Janice Gurtler and Reba Gurtler Morris; stepson, Phillip Snyder; son-in-law, Warren F. Freeman; and great-grandson Marshall Whittle. He leaves behind stepdaughter, Saundra June Freeman; daughter, Dorothy J. Ruch; stepdaughter-in-law, Jane Snyder; brother John Frederick Gurtler; sister Dorothy May Glaze; six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Carl was a corporal in the United States Army, a WWII veteran from Jan. 19, 1948, through May 9, 1952. He was a musician for many years. He played the saxophone, clarinet and flute. He specialized in Big Band.

Carl was dearly loved and will be greatly missed! Til we see you again….. Love all of us!!

•–––––BILLY F. HARKNESS, 84, of North Little Rock passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013. He was born in Belleville, Ark., to the late Clyde and Nellie Bowden Harkness. He was an Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert C. Harkness; his sister, Regina H. Smith; and very special friend, Florence H. Houston. He is survived by his brother James R. Harkness, several nieces and extended family and friends.

•–––––CHARLES EDWARD HOLLIS JR., 76, of North Little Rock was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Little Rock to parents Charles Edward Hollis Sr. and Lela Douglass Hollis Calhoun, and passed away on Jan. 5, 2014, in North Little Rock.

He attended Amarillo High School and was a retired truck driver for Jones Truck Lines. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 878 and Rose City United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing men’s fast-pitch softball and coaching his daughter’s softball teams, as well as singing and country-western dancing. Eddie loved to make people laugh and would sing and tell jokes.

He is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his children, Gary (Tod) Hollis and his wife, Laura, of Frisco, Texas, and Lisa Kay McPeak and her husband, Butch, of North Little Rock; as well as his grandchildren, Casey McPeak of North Little Rock, Kimber McPeak Reaves and her husband, Michael, of Houston, Ark., Kathryn (Katy) Hollis of Frisco, Texas, and Jackson Hollis of Frisco, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Kinsley and Hollis Reaves.

•–––––KENNETH HOLZHAUER JR., 56, of Little Rock passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014. He was born in Pontiac, Ill., and graduated from Pontiac Township High School. He worked for Democrat Printing and Lithographing for 24 years. Ken loved to fish, work with wood and loved spending time with his family. He was an avid NASCAR and football fan.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Martha Holzhauer of Little Rock; son, Kenneth Allen Holzhauer of Little Rock; mother, Connie Holzhauer of Pontiac, Ill.; two sisters, Beth Holzhauer and Lisa Thacker, both of Pontiac, Ill.; mother-in-law, Eloise Durham of Little Rock; two brothers-in-law, Gene Allen (Detta) and Robert Allen (Jean); two sisters-in-law, Mary Mills (Richard) and Nancy Montgomery (Joe); numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth S. Holzhauer Sr.; and brother, Bill Holzhauer.

•–––––LEORA LORENE (BOTTENS) MARTIN departed this world early in the morning of Jan. 4, 2014. Lorene was born in 1917 at Ashton, Kan.

She is survived by three children, Carole Schafer of Mabelvale, Betty McBurnett (Searcy) of Little Rock, and William Martin (Lucy) of Jane, Mo.; one sister of Rogers, Ark.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Lorene was preceded in death by her husband Carl Martin, parents, Mable (McCullough) Bottens and Walter Bottens of Rogers, Ark., two brothers, and three sisters.

Lorene’s parents moved to Rogers, Ark. when she was just a child. Lorene attended the University of Arkansas, where she met Carl Martin, which resulted in a marriage that lasted 69 years until his demise in 2007. Lorene and her husband moved to the Mabelvale, Ark., area where her children were raised, and she lived until passing. Lorene returned to the University of Arkansas, and received her BS degree. In her early years she was active in the Home Demonstration Club (sponsored by US Dept of Agriculture). She retired from the Arkansas State Plant Board after a career of working with seeds. She was active in the Business and Professional Women of Arkansas (BPW) organization, and after retirement was active in the Gardenia Garden Club and the Little Rock Council of Garden Clubs. She was physically active in gardening and flower growing until her early 90s.

•–––––BARRY LEWIS PIPKIN, 59, of Maumelle, Ark., died January 4, 2014. He was born January 17, 1954 to Sidney Leonard Pipkin and Nancy Marshall Pipkin of Memphis, Tenn. He grew up in Tupelo, Miss., and graduated from Tupelo High School in 1972. He attended Millsaps College in Jackson and received degrees from Mississippi State University and The University of Southern Mississippi.

Barry was employed for 20 years in the Behavioral Health Division of Universal Health Services as Divisional Vice President and most recently as the CEO of The Bridge Way Hospital in North Little Rock.

He worked as a clinical psychologist prior to taking on his role in health-care administration. He was a charter and a long time member of First United Methodist Church of Maumelle, Ark.

Barry was an avid lover of sports, nature, gardening, golf, hunting, reading and his beloved Mississippi State Bulldogs. He coached girls and boys soccer and baseball for many years with the Maumelle Parks and Recreation. He devoted his life to helping others and worked tirelessly to make the lives of those struggling with mental illness better. His most valued role was as husband, father and grandfather.

He was predeceased by his parents. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Debbie Harrison Pipkin of 39 years; one son, Brian and his wife, Katie, of Little Rock; one daughter, Allison and her husband, Dustin, of Little Rock; three grandchildren: Margot Elizabeth Pipkin, Harrison Gunter Johnson, and Sawyer Bennett Johnson; his mother-inlaw, Emma Lee Harrison of Tupelo, Miss.; two sisters, Sharon McCool of Jackson, Miss., and Nancy Claire White of Tupelo, Miss.; two brothers, Bobby Pipkin and Sidney Pipkin, both of Tupelo, Miss.; and numerous other family members and friends.

The memorial service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, January 9, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Maumelle, 1201 Edgewood Dr., Maumelle, Ark. 72113, (501) 851-2377. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

•–––––JIMMY D. RAKESTRAW, 74, of Jacksonville passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014. He served in the United States Navy, was a member of the Indian Head Lake Baptist Church and had a strong Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Stella Rakestraw; brother, David L. Rakestraw (Mireille) of Hawaii; daughters Lisa Brown of North Little Rock, Trica Frazier (Warren) of Little Rock; son, David Rakestraw (Angela) of Cabot; stepdaughters Linda Kennedy (Roger) and Carol Allen (Charles) of Jacksonville; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Rakestraw; infant twin brother; parents, Barney and Cora Lee Rakestraw; sister, Mary Davenport; and brother, Barney Rakestraw. Jimmy enjoyed crafts, camping, cooking, telling jokes and making people laugh. He was a very kind man, and he never met a stranger.

•–––––MARY ANN REVES of Little Rock died Saturday, January 4, 2014, after a long illness. She was born to the late Alfred Bransford and Nora Elizabeth Rutherford Bransford. Mary graduated from Batesville High School in 1951. She worked for SW Bell for more than 35 years and was a member of Life Line Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Charles E. “Bud”; one daughter, Elizabeth Reves of Little Rock; two brothers, John Bransford and wife, Joy, of Batesville and Jim Bransford of Little Rock.

Rodriguez on July 16, 1949, in Loveland Pass, Colorado. A member of St. Edward Catholic Church, she loved caring for her family and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and six brothers and sisters. •–––––ETHEL VIRGINIA SHANNON, 71, of Jacksonville went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 5, 2014. She was born December 24, 1942, to the late Joe Lee Silas Sigler and Minnie Sigler. She was preceded in death by two children, Ethel Virginia Jarry, and Cynthia Annette Kirk. Mrs. Shannon was a retired registered nurse, and she will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

•–––––LONNIE TAGGART, 75, went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2014 in Little Rock at the VA Hospital. Lonnie was born on May 23, 1938 in Albany, Mo. He was the son of Ivory Emmery & Beulah Butler Taggart. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga during the Korean War as an Air Traffic Control Man. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was always active in his community as his children and grandchildren grew up. He was an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren. Coaching sports, volunteering with scouts, and volunteering in the community in numerous roles are just a few of the activities he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Taggart, of Shannon Hills, Ark. She went above and beyond the duties as his wife, as she was also his loving caretaker during the past several years; his three adored children: two daughters, Deborah (Taggart) Garrett and her husband Donnie of Sheridan, Ark.; Renee Taggart of Shannon Hills, Ark.; and a son Tim Taggart and his wife Cristi of Kansas City, Kan. His three grandsons Lonnie W. Taggart and wife Mandy of Sheridan, Ark.; D.J. Garrett and his wife Terri of Benton, Ark.; and Landon Taggart and his girlfriend Bailey Brazil of Shannon Hills, Ark.; four great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Serenity of Sheridan, Ark.; Nathan and John of Benton, Ark., and a host of other family and friends who loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

•–––––THOMAS PEARCE WILSON, born in Texarkana, Texas on April 7, 1941, passed away on December 19, 2013 at the age of 72. He was the son of Dan Gilbert Wilson and Mary Ellen Welch Wilson of Texarkana.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Carter Wilson, his son, Thomas Jason Wilson, mother-in-law, Frances Cupp, sister-in-law, Juanita Carter of Haynesville, La., his cousin Susan Webber Carter and her daughter, Robin Wright of Little Rock.

Pearce attended Texarkana Public Schools and graduated from Hendrix College in 1963 with a B.A. in History. In 1967, he earned his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas. Pearce began his law career as a clerk to Associate Justice Lyle Brown, Arkansas Supreme Court and an attorney with the Arkansas Legislative Council. In 1969, he joined First Pyramid Life Insurance Company as Legal Counsel. Here he met the love of his life, Mary Frances. After their marriage in 1970, the couple moved to Houston where Pearce was attorney in charge of the Group and Pension Department of American General Insurance Company, developing life, health, disability and pension contracts. Upon returning to Little Rock in 1981, Pearce made a career change joining Prudential Bache, now Wells Fargo Advisors, as a financial advisor. Pearce served as Vice President of Investments for the Chenal Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, where he served clients for over 28 years. Pearce had a special bond with his clients and considered it a privilege to have served them for so many years.

Pearce loved to serve his community in many ways. He enjoyed being a mentor to young people, whether it was in his professional life or the decades he spent as one of the Arkansas state recruiters for the University of Texas. He cherished his association with the Jewish Federation of Arkansas and all of the friends he had in the Jewish Community. Pearce hosted the Super Sunday fundraiser at his offices for many years.

Pearce will be remembered by friends and family for his kind, gentle personality as well as his practical joking and sometimes wicked sense of humor.

The family would like to thank Pearce’s friends and coworkers for all of the love and support given him during his lengthy illness. A heartfelt appreciation goes to Dee Dunnick, a wonderful caregiver, who made it possible for “Pappa P” to be cared for at home.

Billie moved to Michigan as a teenager and worked for General Motors in Flint for several years. He retired from General Motors and moved to Benton in 1989. Later he worked as a building contractor until his death.

•–––––BOONEVILLE — Van Lewis Kirkpatrick, 91, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris Jensen Kirkpatrick, his parents, Orrie and Nellie Kirkpatrick, his brothers, Seth Kirkpatrick and Tom Kirkpatrick, and his sister, Joyce Egre.

He was born September 20, 1922, in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Van studied engineering before joining the Merchant Marines through the Coast Guard in 1944. After WWII, he helped run the family dairy and farm in Big Foot, Illinois. In 1960, Van, Doris and their children moved to Booneville, Ark., where he raised cattle. He started his own business, Kirkpatrick Scales, in 1969 and managed it until he retired. Van joyfully served his church, First Baptist of Booneville, as a faithful deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a member of Gideons International and Rotary International. He and Doris also took several mission trips to South America. Van was full of life until the end. He loved airplanes and cattle, but above all, Van loved the Lord and his family.

Van is survived by his three children: Lois Schmidt, and her husband Dick of O’Fallon, Illinois; Dan, and his wife Becky of Little Rock; and Joel, and his wife Kim of Claremore, Oklahoma. Van is also survived by seven grandchildren: Katie Choate (David), Dr. Rachel Smiley (Steve), Mary Doddridge (Nathaniel), Michael Kirkpatrick (Leigh), Leah Kirkpatrick (Adam), Rebecca Kirkpatrick, and Lauren Richardson (Domonic); and six great-grandchildren: Willem Culpepper, Walden Culpepper, Lottie Moon Doddridge, Buddy Doddridge, Joel Smiley, and Julia Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, Booneville, the Booneville Chapter of Gideons International, and the American Bible Society. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to Tanya Seymore, who loved and cared for Van over the last three years.

•–––––CLINTON — William Sparlin Ferguson, 88, of Clinton, Arkansas passed away January 4, 2014. He was born on May 19, 1925 in Marshall, Arkansas to James Elisha and Dortha Elfa (Ruff) Ferguson.

Mr. Ferguson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During that time, he was involved in several major naval battles including Leyte, Lindgagen Gulf, and Okinawa. He graduated from the University of Arkansas, where he learned to love the Razorbacks. He retired from the Farmers Home Administration as a county supervisor after 35 years of service.

Mr. Ferguson was a faithful servant of God as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and trustee of the First Baptist Church in Clinton. Mr. Ferguson served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home. He was a devoted and amazing husband and the best dad and grandparent a person could ask for. Mr. Ferguson was loved and admired by all who knew him for his warm and kind personality.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna (Smith) Ferguson of Clinton, daughter, Sharon (Ferguson) Wieser and husband Kevin of Bryant, Arkansas, son, Stephen W. Ferguson and wife Dianna of Mount Pleasant, Texas. Grandchildren, Jay and Beth Wieser of Fort Worth, Texas, Heather Hines of Dallas, Texas, Jamie and Kyle Cook of Rogers, Arkansas, Jill and Derek Franklin of Maumelle, Arkansas, and Will Ferguson of Mount Pleasant, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Sloan, Allie Beth, Elijah, Collins and Luke; one sister, Elda Steen of Chesterton, Indiana and a host of nieces and nephews. After graduation, Dale taught in the Arkansas Public School system for 36 years – first as a teacher and then later as the principal at Parham Elementary School in Little Rock.

Dale was a devout Christian and an avid Bible student. After retirement, she also enjoyed many years of world travel. When she wasn’t traveling, she spent her time with family and enjoyed watching sports on television.

•–––––HAZEN — Donald E. Holmes, 69, of Hazen, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hazel Holmes and granddaughter, Emilee Gracen Holmes.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Rose Holmes; two sons, Greg Holmes and wife, Freda of Hazen and Justin Holmes and wife, Amanda of Paris, Texas; grandchildren, Caroline and James of Hazen, Emilee, Rachel, Emma and Anna of Paris, Texas; brothers, Freddie Holmes and wife Bette of Little Rock, and Gayle Holmes and wife, Anetta of Sherwood; sister, Mattie Holmes Foster and husband, Joe of Sherwood and several nieces and nephews.

Donnie was a graduate of Hazen High School, a retired farmer, a life long member of the Center Point Missionary Baptist church and served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He served in the Arkansas National Guard, was a member of the Center Point Cemetery Committee, and a member and past president of the Hazen School Board.

•–––––HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Robert Lee [Bob] Gordon, 95, passed away on Friday December.27, 2013. He was born on November 29, 1918 outside Knoxville, Tenn. to the late Walter and Sarah [Cable] Gordon.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of First Sergeant. He began his military service in Troop E of the 105th Calvary in the Wisconsin National Guard. After the Guard was federalized in 1941, he was a part of the 32nd Division within the U.S. Fifth Army. Bob saw service in the North Africa and Italian Campaigns, earning a number of medals and honors, including the Bronze Star Medal.

Bob met his future wife, Bobbye, in Louisiana while stationed at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana while preparing for overseas duty. They were married at Muskogee, Okla. just prior to his deployment overseas. After the war, they lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin and Torrance, California before moving, in retirement, to Hot Springs Village. They were married for 61 years before Bobbye’s death.

Bob was an independent business owner, having a Mobil Oil gas station in Wisconsin and Texaco gas stations in Redondo Beach, California. He completed his work career working for AirResearch Aviation, the Garrett Corporation in Torrance.

Bob was preceded in death by Bobbye [Aug. 25, 2003] and is survived by their three sons, Scott [Carolyn] of Little Rock, Craig [Lonette] of Claremore, Okla. and Derek [Karen] of Hot Springs Village as well as seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. For the past 10 years, Bob lived with Derek and Karen Gordon in their home.

Bob and Bobbye were active in the communities in which they lived, most recently having helped to found the Community of Joy Lutheran Church in Hot Springs Village.

She was a member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Teresa was very active in the church and loved being involved. She was a member of the choir, AWANA Sparks leader and was involved in the children’s ministry at the church. Teresa also loved gardening and decorating.

She was preceded in death by her parents who raised her, Alvin and Rena Terrell; her birth parents Elvie Shempert and Mary Harper; sister, Florence Jackson; brother, Jack Shempert. Vernon was best known for his sunny disposition and being a loving grandfather.
