Searcy man charged in grandmother's shooting

A Searcy man is in custody after a suicide call led to his arrest in the shooting of his grandmother.

Grant Crawford, 24, was charged Monday with second-degree battery after authorities received a call around 8 a.m. of a reported suicide at a residence at 115 Heffner St. in Searcy, according to a release from the Searcy Police Department.

When police arrived, they found Rachel Maples, 65, suffering from what they initially thought was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

However, an investigation revealed that a physical altercation had occurred between Crawford and Maples, during which a gun fired and struck Maples, according to police.

Maples was taken to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock where, police say, she is suffering from a life-threatening injury. Crawford was arrested and taken to the White County jail, where he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Crawford's initial court appearance is scheduled for March 4.
