Searcy police: Woman dies from gunshot wound

Grandson's charges upped to manslaughter

A Searcy woman died Saturday morning after police said she was shot during a fight with her grandson earlier in the week.

About 4:30 a.m., Rachel Maples, 65, died at the UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock after she had been shot once to the head on Monday, the Searcy Police Department's spokesman Steve Hernandez said.

Her grandson, Grant Crawford, 24, was charged with second-degree battery after police had received a report about a suicide at a Searcy home, 115 Heffner St., according to a Searcy Police Department news release.

When police arrived at the home, they found Maples suffering from what they initially thought was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, an investigation into the shooting revealed that Maples had been shot during a physical altercation with Crawford.

Crawford's charge has been changed to manslaughter, Hernandez said. He is being held at White County jail, where his bond has now been set at $75,000.

His initial court appearance is scheduled for March 4.
